A recipe for a delicious and nutritious avocado seed green smoothie, with baby spinach, banana, strawberries, and mint.

Did you know that avocado seeds are edible? I can’t blame you if you didn’t, but these bulky seeds in avocados are actually quite nutritious. And the best way to eat an avocado pit? As an ingredient in a tasty green smoothie recipe!

I’ve been adding avocado seeds to my smoothies for quite some time now, and today I’m sharing my favorite smoothie recipe with an avocado pit as one of the ingredients.

Please find the printable version of this recipe further below.

Ingredients

Let’s have a closer look at all the goodness that goes into this green smoothie.

I must say though that to be able to crush an avocado seed, it’s best to try this with a high-end blender that is able to deal with such tough ingredients.

I have had the Vitamix 5200 for many years now and it can do that type of job almost effortlessly.

Ingredients:

  • 1 avocado
  • 1 avocado seed
  • 2 cups baby spinach leaves
  • 1 large banana
  • 1 small cup fresh strawberries
  • 2 mint leaves
  • 1/2 lemon (or lime) (optional)
  • 1 large cup water
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes

Why Avocado Seeds?

Let me explain a bit more about consuming avocado seeds.

As I mentioned, I’ve been blending the occasional avocado pit for some time now, after doing a bit of research on the nutritional benefits.

The pits in avocados are rich in antioxidants. In fact, the pit contains more antioxidants than the actual flesh of an avocado.

They also contain a good amount of dietary fiber, which supports a healthy digestive system, helps to lower cholesterol, and helps to keep our blood sugar stable. One avocado seed can give us the recommended fiber intake for one day.

However, as nutritious as avocado seeds may be, it’s not as if they have nutrients that you can’t find in other food sources.

In other words, there is no need to suddenly start stocking up on avocado seeds. But if you do happen to have a high-powered blender, why not try out this recipe and see what it tastes like for you?

Baby spinach

I also put spinach in this smoothie, as that is my favorite green, but of course, you’re free to experiment with kale or any other vegetable.

I just love adding spinach to smoothies, because it always works really well with other greens and fruits.

Verdict

This green smoothie recipe with an avocado seed as a core ingredient is packed with nutrients, which is one of the reasons I love it so much.

It’s not for everyone though, as the seed adds some bitterness to this smoothie. If you find that it is just a little too bitter for you, perhaps add some more sweet fruits to balance the flavors to your taste.

I personally love experimenting with smoothie add-ins such as mint, lemon, and ginger, as they offer extra flavors and nutritional benefits.

Just don’t add too much of these types of extra ingredients because they do have quite intense flavors.
