Buying Guide
Consider the following criteria when looking to buy a new, single-serving, personal blender.
Type of Blender
Before purchasing a new blender, it’s important to think about what you expect to be doing with the blender. A premium countertop blender can create smoothies in batches, whereas a compact-sized, single-serving personal blender is designed to quickly create smoothies on the go.
I have two types of blenders in my kitchen. The Vitamix 5200 is an incredibly powerful blender that I purchased years ago and still works like a boss. I also have an old NutriBullet that I occasionally use when I want to quickly prepare a refreshing drink.
The Vitamix I use much more often, to blend larger batches of smoothies and soups. It can blend tough ingredients, such as kale, without any problems. But I would not so easily put these types of ingredients in my NutriBullet.
With my Vitamix, I prefer to focus on using nutritious vegetables. And I use the NutriBullet for quick and easy, fruity smoothies.
Power
The power of the blender will determine how well it can blend fruits and veggies into a creamy smoothie without bulky bits and pieces.
A blender with higher wattage will typically be more powerful. For a personal blender, you should expect at least 250-300 watts for good blending results.
Size and Capacity
As you’re looking for a single-serve blender, you won’t need a large container. The blender + jar needs to be compact-sized and lightweight so that you can take it with you when traveling should you want to.

Some personal blenders do come with multiple containers; one for a quick smoothie on the go, and a bigger jar to create smoothies in batches.
Ideally, your new blender should also include a travel cup to drink your smoothie from.
Ease of Use
Some blenders are more user-friendly than others. Look for simple operation, preferably with one-touch blending. A model that’s easy to assemble and disassemble will also be easier to clean.
For me, when I use my personal blender for a quick smoothie fix, I want to be able to easily and quickly clean that blender.
Durability
The materials used in the blender will, of course, affect its durability and longevity.
Depending on your budget, look for a blender with stainless steel blades and BPA-free plastic for the cup or jar. The motor should also be built to last, especially if you plan to use the blender regularly.
In general, though, single-serve blenders may not always create the best smoothies with the perfect texture. But they can do it fast and without much effort. They also typically just have one button, to turn it on or off. And often no extra features, such as a pulse button.
Noise Level
As we all know, blenders can be pretty noisy, which might be a problem if you live with others or if you’re sensitive to noise.
Some models are specifically designed to be quieter, so consider this if the noise level concerns you. I recommend reading consumer reviews, as these will often mention noise levels.
Price
Single-serve blenders tend to be a lot cheaper than regular smoothie blenders, but cost shouldn’t be the main driver behind purchasing this type of blender.
Surprisingly, single-serve personal blenders can range significantly in price. Higher-end models typically offer more power and features, but there are also many affordable options that perform well for basic blending tasks.
You should expect a price between $40 and $120 for a decent-quality personal blender.
Brand Reputation and Reviews
It’s also important to consider the reputation of the manufacturer and check reviews of the specific model you’re considering.
This can give you a better idea of the blender’s performance and reliability over time. But it can also mean that you won’t end up overpaying for a product that happens to be a big brand.
