What to Look for in a Single Serve Blender?

It’s important to realize what a portable, single-serve blender is designed to do. It is able to create small batches of smoothies on the go, without hassle, and with not much cleaning involved.

Single serve blenders tend to be a lot cheaper than regular blenders, but cost shouldn’t be the main driver behind purchasing this type of blender. If you’re looking for a good quality blender that can make the best smoothies and soups at a very low price, a single serve blender may turn into a disappointment.

The best reason to buy a single serve blender is convenience. A small, portable blender should be able to quickly prepare a healthy drink, within minutes, or even seconds. Pour it into the take-away cup or bottle that usually comes with it, and you’re good to go. Cleaning should also be a breeze.

Single serve blenders may not always create the best smoothies with the perfect texture. But they can do it fast, and without much effort. They also typically just have one button, to turn it on or off. Usually no fancy features, such as a pulse button.

Should You Choose a Regular, or a Single Serve Blender?

I have two types of blenders in my kitchen. A Vitamix 5200, my all-time favorite blender that I purchased years ago and still works like a boss. And I also have an old NutriBullet that I occasionally use when I want to quickly prepare a green fix and I have the ingredients ready to go.

The Vitamix I use much more often, to blend larger batches of smoothies and soups. It can blend tough ingredients – such as kale – without any problems. But I would not so easily put these types of ingredients in my NutriBullet.

With my Vitamix, I prefer to focus on using nutritious vegetables. And I use the NutriBullet for quick and easy, fruity smoothies.

One useful tip I’d like to share is to prepare sets of ingredients and store them in the freezer. For example, cut different types of fruits in smaller pieces and freeze them in so that one batch fits nicely in your single serve blender. This makes it even easier to quickly prepare smoothies on the go.

Best Single Serve Blenders

Here are my 6 recommendations for best single serve blenders that are able to prepare smoothies of very decent quality. They are conveniently small and compact in size and easy to clean.

1. Cosori 9-Piece Portable High Speed Blender

Cosori 9-Piece Portable Single Serve Blender

With two 32 oz containers and one 24 oz container, this Cosori can hardly be called a single serve blender. But it works in the same manner. Throw your favorite ingredients in one of the containers, place it upside down on the motor and blend away. De-attach the container and your smoothie is ready for consumption.

The motor in the Cosori is quite powerful and does a reasonable job at blending ingredients into a drinkable smoothie. What’s also good is that you’ll get both a travel lid (so you can drink on the go) and a storage lid (so you can store in the fridge for later use). I must say though that the 32 oz jars are too big to drink from.

The buttons on the Cosori are simple and easy to use, with the exception of the middle button. The start/stop button is the most obvious option, and the one you’ll be using most. The pulse button on the right is also straightforward. The button in the middle though is a bit awkward. It lets you pulse in intervals of three seconds with one second rest. It repeats this process up to ten times. This is a bit weird because you can easily use the actual pulse button to control the pulsing yourself. So I find the middle button a bit unnecessary.

Also, in my opinion at least, you should never have high expectations of a pulse button on any single-serve blender. I would happily use the pulse button on my Vitamix for tough ingredients as I know it will be able to deal with them really well. But I would never use a single-serve blender for tougher ingredients. That’s simply not what a single-serve blender is for. Having said that, it’s nice that Cosori includes this option, just use it with caution.

The Cosori is super easy to clean. All removable parts are dishwasher safe, even though you can also just quickly rinse them with a bit of soap. The blade section can also be easily rinsed clean.

Summary

  • 2 x 32 oz containers
  • 1 x 24 oz container
  • 23K RPM and 800 watt motor
  • User manual and recipe book included
  • Pulse and auto blend options
  • BPA free plastic materials
  • Dishwasher safe
  • 2 years warranty

2. Epica Single Serve Personal Blender

Epica Single Serve Personal Blender

I personally love this Epica single-serve blender as it’s exactly what a single-serve blender should be. It’s compact, it comes with a perfect-sized container mug, has a powerful enough motor to blend simple smoothies, and has just one simple button to operate it.

Simplicity and convenience are what matter most when it comes to single serve blenders and this Epica machine is a testament to that. Locking and unlocking the mug is easy with two simple switches. The element with the cutting blades can be easily attached to the mug. Replace it with the sealable lid when you’re finished and you’re ready to take your smoothie outside.

Cleaning is also very easy. Rinse the blades after use and the rest can go into the dishwasher.

Summary

  • 20 oz mug
  • 23K RPM and 250 watt motor
  • Simple one-touch control
  • BPA-free plastic materials
  • Dishwasher safe
  • 2 years warranty

3. Vitamix S30 Personal Blender

Vitamix S30 Personal Blender

I must say that I had to think twice before including the Vitamix S30 in this list. As you may already know, I’m a huge fan of Vitamix, but the S30 has a hefty price tag.

It’s far more expensive than the other machines in this list. But… it’s an awesome machine. It’s arguably the best one in the list, but price is definitely something that needs to be considered. In addition, it’s not as compact as most other single-serve blenders, which is another drawback.

So why buy the Vitamix S30? If you ignore the extra 30 oz container for a second, the S30 is in fact a single serve blender. It works the same way as most other portable blenders. The S30 comes with a large cup that you place upside down on top of the blender and within moments you have yourself a beautiful green drink. It performs really well and cleaning is a breeze.

There are two reasons to choose for the Vitamix S30. You want the convenience of having a regular blender and a single-serve blender in one. And you also want top quality smoothies. So, if you have the budget available, the S30 is a great choice. Vitamix also offers a very generous 5 years warranty on this model.

Summary

  • 20 oz portable container
  • 40 oz compact container for larger batches
  • Powerful 790 watt motor
  • Variable speed control and pulse function
  • BPA-free plastic materials
  • Dishwasher safe
  • 5 years warranty

4. NutriBullet 600 Single Serve Hi-Speed Blender

NutriBullet Single Serve Hi-Speed Blender

As the inventors of single-serve blenders, NutriBullet can’t be ignored in this list. While over the years many other manufacturers have entered the market of personal, compact blenders, but NutriBullet has always been able to maintain a strong position.

This bestselling hi-speed NutriBullet model has a reasonably powerful 600 watt motor that can easily prepare standard smoothies within one minute. Its very compact size makes it perfect to store onto any kitchen counter top.

If you prefer a little more power, you may want to consider upgrading to a 900 watt NutriBullet. It blends a little better than the 600 and doesn’t cost a huge amount more.

Summary

  • 24 oz tall mug
  • 18 oz short mug
  • 600 watt motor
  • Comes with recipe book and user manual

6. BLACK+DECKER FusionBlade Personal Blender

BLACK+DECKER FusionBlade Personal Blender

Perhaps the most affordable single serve blender in this list is the Black+Decker FusionBlase personal blender. This very basic but efficient blender comes with two 20 oz plastic jars complete with twist-on travel lids so you can take your smoothie with you without spilling. Simply replace the blade lid with the travel lid once your smoothie is ready. The jars and lids are also dishwasher-safe.

The stainless blades are branded as FusionBlade and designed such that they can crush fruits, vegetables and ice into drinkable smoothies and soups. Operation is very simple. With just one on/off button you have full control over the desired consistency of your smoothies.

Final Thoughts

Hopefully this article has given you a good idea about what single serve blenders are designed to do, and which ones are worth buying.

As mentioned, I have both a large and a small blender and I use them for very different purposes. As long as you keep in mind what you want to use it for, you can’t go wrong.

Happy blending!
