Herbs are an excellent source of so many nutrients, vitamins and minerals, yet most of us tend to skip them when doing our weekly grocery shopping.

It’s about time we change that once and for all, because herbs offer great health benefits, such as boosting our immune system and fighting off those unwelcome winter nasties.

Here are 4 herbs that will help to keep you healthy throughout winter.

1. Thyme

Thyme contains antiseptic properties that can kill bacteria and help ease bronchial issues like sore throats.

Many mouth wash brands use thymol (thyme’s active agent) as an antiseptic component. This helps clear congestion from lungs and bronchial passages.

2. Sage

Sage is a very important herb for winter health because of its antiseptic and antibacterial qualities. Salvia (botanical name for this herb), is derived from the Latin salvere (“to be saved”) and is a reference to this herb’s curative properties.

3. Echinacea

Echinacea helps maintain a normal, healthy immune system, capable of warding off the typical Winter health issues. It can also serve as a soothing treatment for bug bites.

The echinacea plant has antiviral properties and has been used to treat health issues such as colds, flus and ear infections.

4. Nasturtium

The nasturtium plant is packed with vitamin C. Taking vitamin C daily can offer relief from cold symptoms significantly.

It’s great to explore all the different types of herbs in the supermarket. They often get neglected when we buy our greens, but herbs actually offer specific health benefits that mainstream vegetables like spinach and kale don’t.
