3 Delicious Green Tea Smoothie Recipes

Once you have a good blender in your kitchen, it’s time to start experimenting with different fruits and vegetables that you would otherwise not usually eat or buy. Over the years, I have created many green smoothie recipes, some worked really well, and others turned out to be a complete fail!

But that’s the fun of having a blender. Just keep experimenting and see what works best for you. It was only recently that I tried adding green tea to my green smoothies as I was looking for new ideas for recipes.

I stumbled upon a couple of recipes with green tea, and while at first I didn’t quite get it, it started to make more sense to me as I tried a few recipes out. I’ve always loved drinking green tea in the afternoon as it doesn’t give you such a strong buzz as coffee does, but still gives you a bit of a boost due to the caffeine content. Green tea also relaxes me.

So far, I’ve discovered and prepared quite a few green tea smoothie recipes and it’s now become one of my favorite ingredients. So I’ve decided to list my favorite three green tea smoothie recipes that I would love for you to try out.

Why Green Tea?

Green tea has numerous health benefits so it makes perfect sense to add some fresh green tea or green tea powder to smoothies.

Ever wondered why the Japanese get to live so long? I’m sure green tea is one of their secrets! Green tea is loaded with antioxidants, such as chlorophyll, that are crucial in achieving and maintaining overall health.

 
 

Matcha Green Tea Powder

Another option, which is probably easier, is to use green tea powder. Matcha green tea powder has become a bit of a thing in recent years, but what exactly is it?

Matcha is finely ground powder of green tea, mostly produced and grown in Japan. In their last stages of growth, green tea leaves are placed in a shaded environment before harvesting.

Protection against sunlight is to increase levels of chlorophyll and amino acids. The leaves are then ground to produce a fine powder.

The idea is that matcha multiplies the health benefits of green tea, because essentially the whole leaf of green tea plants is consumed, and not just the brewed water.

If you prefer to use freshly made green tea, it may be best to prepare the green tea the night before you make the green smoothie:

  1. Boil some water (for at least 2 cups)
  2. Place green tea bag in a pot (or use organic green tea leaves)
  3. Pour hot water in the pot and let it sit for about 10-15 minutes
  4. Take the tea bag or leaves out and let the tea cool off overnight
 
 
 
 

Just so that you can enjoy a green tea smoothie any time of day, I’ve created one smoothie recipe ideal for in the mornings, one for in the afternoons and one for in the evenings. I don’t recommend to prepare all three of them on the same day though!

3 Refreshing and Delicious Green Tea Smoothie Recipes

So here are my three favorite recipes for green tea smoothies. As with all green smoothie recipes, experimenting is key, so feel free to vary the amounts of all the different ingredients just the way your taste buds like them. All three recipes serve around 1 liter of green goodness.

1. The Morning Energizer

What better way to start the day than with a nutritious and energizing green smoothie that will also give you a caffeine shot? So much win!

This recipe is focused on sweet fruits full of antioxidants, topped up with a healthy dose of chia seeds.

Morning Green Tea Smoothie Recipe

 
  • 1 Cup blueberries
  • 2 Peeled oranges
  • 1 Spoon of chia seeds
  • 2 Cups of green tea (or 2 teaspoons of matcha powdered green tea)
  • 1 Glass of water + ice cubes

The berries and oranges will give you not only a great dose of energy, but also lots of necessary antioxidants.

Chia seeds are a nutritious powerhouse, with lots of iron, magnesium, calcium, fiber, potassium and omega-3 fatty acids.

2. The Afternoon Booster

We can all get that sluggish feeling in the afternoon, usually around 3PM. The best way to remedy this and to get you through the rest of the day, is to indulge on a delicious green smoothie with a dose of green tea. This will definitely give you that healthy boost.

This recipe has a great mix of bananas (the perfect afternoon snack!), honey, lime and greens.

Afternoon Green Tea Smoothie Recipe

 
  • 2 Bananas
  • 1 Large cup of kale
  • 1 Teaspoon of honey
  • 1 (or 1/2) Lime
  • 2 Cups of green tea (or 2 teaspoons of matcha powdered green tea)
  • 1 Glass of water + ice cubes

Bananas are the perfect fruit to give you an instant and healthy energy boost. Kale is a classic but still one of my favorite greens. Kale works extremely well in green smoothies.

The honey and lime will give this smoothie a very tangy taste, perfect for those afternoons when you need to stay sharp.

3. The Evening Chiller

Some may say that evenings aren’t the best time of the day to drink a green smoothie. I dare to disagree! Evenings are great for green smoothies, especially when you don’t have enough time to prepare a big dinner.

I typically try not to make my evening smoothies too sweet, because I don’t need the instant energy at that time of the day. So instead of using different fruits, I try to focus more on the greens and herbs.

Evening Green Tea Smoothie Recipe

 
  • 1 Avocado
  • 1 Large cup of spinach
  • 1 Cucumber
  • 1/2 Cup of fresh mint leaves
  • 1 Apple
  • 2 Spoons of Greek yogurt
  • 2 Cups of green tea (or 2 teaspoons of matcha powdered green tea)
  • 1 Glass of water + ice cubes

The avocado in this recipe will keep your smoothie nice and thick, giving you that feeling of satisfaction that you experience after having a tasty dinner. Don’t throw away the avocado seed though, you may want to consider putting it in the smoothie too!

The cucumber will make the smoothie a bit more watery to balance out the creaminess of the avocado. The spinach and mint will give you a good dose of nutrients, such as magnesium, iron, calcium and lots of different vitamins.

An apple will give this smoothie a very refreshing finishing touch. I personally like the taste of apple in this green tea smoothie but feel free to use a pear, banana or even a mango.

I love adding Greek yogurt too, because it can give your green smoothie a really nice texture.

Be mindful though that if you’re a bit sensitive to caffeine, I wouldn’t recommend preparing a green tea smoothie for the evenings. It may just keep you awake all night!
