A smoothie recipe with two of my favorite ingredients, does it get any better? Dark chocolate and avocado work surprisingly well together in a smoothie, especially when enjoyed in the morning as a breakfast substitute.

Add some spinach and a banana and you’ll be drinking quite a nutritious smoothie that will provide you lots of energy and nutrients to get the day started the right way.

Chocolate Avocado Smoothie Ingredients

Let’s have a closer look at all the goodness that goes into this delicious and surprisingly nutritious drink.

Ingredients:

  • 1 whole avocado (pitted)
  • 1 large banana (frozen or fresh)
  • 2 tbsp cocoa powder (or raw cacao)
  • 1 cup fresh spinach leaves
  • 1 large cup milk (or almond milk, non-dairy milk)
  • 1 tsp honey (optional)
  • 1/2 cup ice cubes (optional)

Nutritional Benefits

The avocado is an incredibly nutritious and versatile fruit that I often use as an ingredient in my smoothies. They tend to thicken smoothies a lot, so make sure you find the right balance with other ingredients and liquids.

Avocados are incredibly nutrient rich, are low in sugar, and full of healthy and beneficial fats that help to keep you satiated and full for long.

I’ve taken the pit out in this recipe, but did you know that you could also blend a whole avocado including the seed? Check out this avocado seed green smoothie recipe!

Avocado cut in two

One of my favorite leafy greens to blend with fruits is spinach, another true nutritional powerhouse. It’s loaded with tons of different nutrients, such as vitamin C, calcium, folate, magnesium, potassium and also protein.

Verdict

I personally love the taste of dark chocolate in the morning with breakfast, so this chocolate avocado smoothie recipes is one of my favorites to prepare in the morning. It gives me great energy and allows me to wake up and get going quickly.

Cocoa powder

The banana and small teaspoon of honey both add a bit of sweetness, but if I had to choose between the two I would most definitely pick the banana and leave the honey out. It’s all about personal preferences, do what works best for your own taste buds.

If you don’t consume dairy products, feel free to replace the milk with something like almond milk, or any other non-dairy milk version. You can also just use water, or a watered down cup of orange juice.
